While I have always had a general awareness of the importance of estate planning and preparation regarding the preservation of assets and ensuring a sound financial future, I never actually took concrete action. However, when my parents’ health began to fail, and the likelihood that they would need residential care soon became apparent, things started getting real.

Fortunately, I was well-acquainted with an attorney who was able to provide invaluable elder law tips for Montecito, California families like my own. Now that we have established a clear plan for Mom and Dad’s finances and medical care, my siblings and I all rest much easier at night.

An authorization from either a doctor or healthcare provider is necessary for a person to receive coverage for a Medi-Cal nursing home care. Once the resident has the authorization upon admission, they must remain in a necessary medical condition. Every resident who qualifies is permitted to keep $35 of whatever income they receive for personal needs.

If a resident has no income, then they can make an application for SSP which will provide them with a monthly $50 payment for individual needs. Of course, this will depend upon eligibility. This type of information is crucial for anyone who has elderly parents who need to move into a care home.
